Lymphoedema in children can be categorised in the following way.

  • Primary 
  • Familial
  • Congenital <1 year old
  • Late onset >1 year old
  • Secondary
  • Infection
  • Cancer
  • Trauma
  • Obesity

•Lymphoedema can affect anyone, young or old, male or female. • •Paediatric prevalence is estimated at 1.15/100,000

•Currently, the most common type of lymphoedema seen in children is primary oedema. •Childhood primary lymphoedema may be a stand alone condition or a part of a more complex syndrome, currently 23 genetic syndrome have been identified with links to lymphoedema development.
