Lymphoedema in children can be categorised in the following way.
- Primary
- Familial
- Congenital <1 year old
- Late onset >1 year old
- Secondary
- Infection
- Cancer
- Trauma
- Obesity

•Currently, the most common type of lymphoedema seen in children is primary oedema. •Childhood primary lymphoedema may be a stand alone condition or a part of a more complex syndrome, currently 23 genetic syndrome have been identified with links to lymphoedema development.
